Charles and Meka Stathis, the Greek Immigrants who started the partriarchial side of the Stathis Family in America
Wow! What a photo of a special point in time! Here we see 3 Stathoyianopoulos Brothers and wives (unless the young woman on the left is a grown daughter?) and Demothenes and his Brother Pete as very little boys. (Uncle John must have been at school when this was taken!) Charles's second wife here, Meka, (Big Pa Pou and his 2nd wife) seen in her prime; I think this is the youngest photo we have of her. The woman in the middle, best guess is that's the mother of the most famous of the many Sofie's, Aunt Sofie from Schenectaday who was well known to the Stathis's in Syracuse through many visits both ways, thus that woman being Nata, husband of Big Pa Pou's next oldest brother, Vageli. Guessing such because of her resemblance to Aunt Sofie, mother of cousins Dimitra, Penny, and Georgia. The other is either Andoni or Panayoti the next 2 youngest to Big Pa Pou who were of the original 4 brothers who stayed in the USA. (See Family Tree, Paternal Back to Greece, linked on the Home Page. Maria Delaporta (Stathis), HS Graduation, Central High, Syracuse 1943. Maria was an Honor Student and was also awarded at Graduation the Virgil Medal for Latin. Maria was Salutatorian from Roosevelt Jr. High School 4 years earlier.

Maria Delaporta. Also believed to be her High School Senior Photo, age 18? So beautiful. The coloring here is the original copy, done at the time with the color-photography technology they would have had then. If she is 18 here, then this is Spring 1944, smack in the heart of WWII, just a few months before D-Day. According to the Parent Interview of 1993, she stated she went to work in a fighter airplane production facility. The writing on it says: To my Brother and Sister, With Love, Maria. Can't figure-out who she would have meant by brother? Likely one of her older sister's husbands....if one had been married at that point. Maybe not....The Soldier in Training for Battlefield Medic. Texas Late 1943 or early 1944. The shadows make an interesting effect to his stately Saluting. We see in shadow his commanding Officer that he is presenting himself.
Above: Greek School 1935, Maria age 9 in front Row (in double braids). Includes her sister, Barbara, and other lifelong Greek friends. Such a cast of characters, all the first generation children of turn-of-the-centery Greek Immigrants coalesced in Syracuse, N.Y. One can understand the bond that they all felt and shared in Syracuse, and for many, shared for their whole lives. It's interesting that the tiny writing at the top, listing the names, gives the maiden and married names of these kids, thus someone delineated that many years later.
